In the current climate it’s more important than ever to keep our eyes and ears open to people who may be struggling around us. This isn’t something confined to family alone, as sometimes strangers need a helping hand too. The true heroes of the world are those that step up to the plate and give them it.
Chauncy Jones was one young man who needed help. A 16-year-old, straight-A student, he was trying desperately to get a job in order to help his mom make rent, bills and buy food.
Whilst at Kroger – a “rich peoples store” – trying to get something to eat, he ran into shopper Matt White and asked if he could carry his bags to his car in return for a pack of donuts. Little did he know that chance en-counter would change his life …
Having been asked for a pack of donuts in return for having his bags carried to his car, Matt took it upon himself to do more than what was asked of him. Shocked by Chauncy’s question, he decided to give him more than just a sugary breakfast.
Matt took Chancy back into the store itself and bought toiletries, cereal and other staples for him and his mother, Barbara. Going one step further, Matt delivered the groceries himself, and then shared his experience on Facebook.
“I just met the most inspiring person ever. His name is Chauncy Jones. He’s a 16-year-old from Memphis … He approached me while I was shopping for produce asking if he could help me carry my grocery bags to my car in exchange for buying him a pack of glazed donuts.
“This kid looked like he had been turned down 100 times. He looked ashamed, hungry and br-oken. In my heart, I screamed a loud “yes!”, But to him, I just chuckled and said, “yeah dude, we’ll get you some donuts.”
I asked him if he was by himself and he said that he had come all the way out here with the hopes of someone buying him something to eat because he and his mother had nothing at home. He had no phone, a bus pass, and he was depending on the graces of a stranger to feed him within the hour before the bus left.”
“So, needless to say, he and I went on a shopping spree. We had so much fun! We got cereal and chips and frozen veggies, pizzas, Cheetos, melons and pasta, peanut butter, milk, soap, toothbrushes, just a little bit of everything. All the while we talked and he told me how he makes straight A’s in school and is trying to get a job to help his mom pay rent. This kid was amazing.
“Chauncy kept calling himself poor, but he told me that one day he was gonna be wealthy and own his own businesses so that he could help other people in his neighborhood and buy them groceries like me. I was in awe.”
When Matt drove Chauncy home, he realised the stark truth of the 16-year-old’s reality. Matt went on to explain how Chauncy and his mom were living on sleeping pads made out of sleeping bags, didn’t own a sofa or bed and had nothing at all in their fridge. According to him, Chauncy’s mother had a disability that made walking a difficulty, as well as giving her the shakes.
Matt knew that his gesture was already making a big difference to Chauncy, and he gave him a hug before leaving and told him that God loved him.
But Matt didn’t stop there. As if buying groceries for a struggling family wasn’t enough, he set up a GoFundMe page to help raise money, so that Chauncy could buy a lawnmower. Once his story went rival, the page raised over $300,000.
Matt has since updated his Facebook page with some amazing news.
He writes: “As of today, Barbara and Chauncy have a new life. God has provided for them a home, a car, a new school, he has restored Barbara’s health and continues to present them with endless opportunities for the future. Every dollar donated to Chauncy’s Chance was put into a protected trust that will provide them a secure future for decades. In every sense of the word, God has provided.”
Stories like this give me a warm feeling inside. From a young boy asking for a small favour in a store, to a family getting a new home and a brighter future … never forget what one gesture can do for someone.
