Eight-year-old Jackson McKie was diagnosed with a cyst on his brain when he was a baby, along with a chronic condition called hydrocephalus. Growing up and spending tons of time in and out of the ho-spital has been difficult on him, but his stuffie helped alleviate some of the stress. Fortunately, his team of doctors have been wonderful, too. In fact, his neurosurgeon Dr. Daniel McNeely did something so incredibly sweet before Jackson’s last sur-gery that people around the world can’t stop praising the doctor. Dr. McNeely has cared for Jackson since he was diagnosed with his condition as an infant. Jackson brought along his teddy bear to the operating room before his latest sur-gery.
The little boy asked his neurosurgeon if he would be willing to not just operate on him but on something else. His beloved teddy bear.
How could the doctor say no? So he agreed to perform sur-gery not just on Jackson, but on his stuffie, too, he told CTV News Atlantic.
“I thought if there was something I could do to help make him feel better, it seemed like a simple gesture and I was only too happy to oblige.”
The doctor asked the nurses to prepare a small sur-gical table with a few necessary tools. He used leftover stitches from Jackson’s sur-gery on the bear, fondly called Little Baby.
Jackson’s father Rick McKie had nothing but praise for Dr. McNeely. Not just as a life-saving neurosurgeon, but as a compassionate human being, too.
“He’s one of the nicest human beings I’ve ever met.”
When he came out of recovery, Jackson was beyond thrilled to find his favorite teddy bear all patched up. Little Baby’s sur-gery happened to be Dr. McNeely’s first on a toy and he good-naturedly shared them on social media.
“Patient asks if I can also fix teddy bear just before being put off to sleep … how could I say no?”
Dr. McNeely’s kindhearted gesture has since gone viral. He had hoped to brighten people’s day with his Tweet.
“I thought it might make a few people smile, that was the only intention I had. I’m glad that others are enjoying it.”
What a wonderful doctor to have done this for his patient!
